I know the snobs among you will type down your nose at this, but I recently tried Apothic Red and I really, really like it. A lot.

The 2010 is the best/smoothest, but the 2011 is also good.

What kits, if any, approximate this wine?

You are right there Bob, the Apothic Red is very good. The Apothic White, not so much. We had a bottle of the red at a friends house over the summer.

The brambly spice of Zinfandel, dark fruit flavors of Syrah, the bold notes of Cabernet Sauvignon and the smooth elegance of Merlot unite to create this captivating red blend.
Apothic Red reveals intense fruit aromas and flavors of rhubarb and black cherry, complemented by hints of mocha, chocolate, brown spice and vanilla. The plush, velvety mouthfeel and the smooth finish round out this intriguing, full-bodied red blend.

This is a robust blend from California with immense aromas of cedar, blackberry, cherry and dried floral notes that fill the glass. Black currant, ripe fig, savoury spice and sweet oak flavours lead you to the well-balanced finish boasting soft, integrated tannins.

Very interesting descriptions. "Immense aromas of cedar..." sounds a bit different.

I was at a local winery last Wed and they told me that Apothic Red is the most popular red wine sold in Nova Scotia and I'd never heard of it before ( I rarely buy wine at the provincial liquor corp). This winery made it's own version of apothic red with a blend of merlot, cab franc and marechal foch and I found it to be very good.

I've had it a couple of times and I like it a lot. But I'm a $10/bottle kind of guy.

Steve - I think the descriptions are pretty accurate with the exception of cedar. I haven't been able to 'find' any cedar yet. I'll keep trying :)

Why pay that much? The last 12 or 15 bottles cost $7.97 each ...

10 bucks used to be my limit, but now I'll even them out, I can get one for 12 if I get another for 8, so that's the most likely reason I tried Apothic Red other than I like wines with Zinfandel and Syrah in it. Long way of saying I probably paid $8 for it as well.

I always have a bottle or two of this in my 'cellar'. I like the fruit forwardness of the wine. It's always on sale to it seems here for under $8/bottle.

It is a decent cheap bottle. I highly recommend a Michael David wine called Don't blend. About 11 or 12 bucks and worth every penny. I ordered a case last week.
