Hello all! My name is Neil and, long story short, I'm trying to line up the ducks so I can grow grapes on my parents' property in Central Connecticut. Though I'm currently in Afghanistan, I live in Loudoun County, Viriginia right in wine country. I'm attracted to farming since the best time I spend is not in front of a computer but laboring whether it be construction or yard work. I'm doing a lot of reading while I'm over here about growing grapes and wine making. Thanks for reading my post! Cheers (as the Brits here say to anything and everything)!

Welcome, Neil.

That's very inspiring, Neil. Stay with it and learn all you can. Lots of grapes are grown in that region. You just may very well be the next successful operation in that area.

We have several successful vintners on this forum. One of them is Grapeman, from somewhat near where you want to settle - New York. He is involved in the educational end of the art of growing grapes and just might have some great advice for you.

The very best of luck for you and get home safely!

Welcome Neil and thank you for your services in the armed forces

Hi Neil. While I don't have any experience growing grapes I am in CT. So if you're ever around when you get back let me know.

Welcome to WMT!

Welcome! Why on Earth do you want to grow grapes somewhere where you dont live? Im guessing you are military as is my BIL who was also recently sent where you are. Im just not sure why you want to grow stuff where you are not as keeping up a vineyard is a full time job.

Just keep doing your research check out what the local vineyards are growing for vines and you already know what kind of wine you like to drink and between the two you will figure out what type of vines to start with your dream will come true when you get back home maybe your folks back home can get the vines planted for you while you are away
