This is my first year of wine making. I moved into a house that had a very small vine garden (trellis). I've managed to produce 3 gallons from my grapes, but the third gallon harvested at the end of the season has some sort of film forming on top of the liquid. Is that affecting the liquid? Should I just dispose of it or siphon it to a clean jar and just all will be fine? I didn't have this issue with the 2 previous gallons.

Hi ckk2012, welcome to winemakingtalk.

Can you post up what type of wine you are making, the ingredients you added, the sg before and what it is now? And a pic would be a big help.

Not sure what the film is, but it is usually not a good sign.

It is not possible to know what is happening without a lot more details.

How did you make the wine (detailed procedures)? What was the starting specific gravity and the current SG? How long has it been sitting and in what? Do you have it topped up in a carboy with an airlock? Have you added sulfites (camp den)?

Also, does it smell or taste bad? Generally, if it smells and tastes ok, it will be fine. In that case you should rack the wine off from under the film leaving any film behind and get some sulfites into it to inhibit the bacteria.
