As a new wine maker, how soon after bottling the wine can a bottle be opened. I heard something about bottle shock if opened before two weeks after the bottling.

I would wait a month and that USUALLY but not always takes care f that bottle shock. Welcome Bobby and hope you stay with us and share your experiences with us.

Thanks so much, I may be a newby to wine making but have been drinking it for a long time. I probably will have lots of questions so you may get tired of me.
Thanks again for the info.

Bobbie, I would wait longer than a month. But that is my personal preference only.

Welcome to the forum Bobby. We will never tire of your questions. While some forums are snippy with newb questions and gripe that you should do a search before asking such basic questions we have a different philosophy here.

Bottle shock will vary with wine to wine. Storage conditions such as light, temperature and humidity, oxygen exposure when made and bottled, sulfite levels are a few of the things that contribute and dictate bottle shock. Sometimes it is only a few days, sometimes a month or so. Normally a couple weeks will allow the wine to settle down after bottling but I normally give it a couple months at the minimum. I am a very very patient kind of guy though.

Thanks for the welcome and great advice. I just need to be patient and not try to share my first batch with everyone I know. It will just be better when I do share.
Thanks again.

Welcome Bobbie!

You couldn't have picked a better way to getyour new hobby started. I have been a member only since March , but wonder why I never thought of this before! Hope to someday be half as good at winemaking as many of the contributors to this website. Seems like the only thing they don't know how to do is make the wine age faster. Good luck and enjoy! Jim

Thanks Jim,

I hope to make a great wine as well as make new friends. I used to think traveling around to winerys and tasting wine was a good hobby but now I want to take a bigger step and make my own. Just wish I was retired and could dedicate more time to it.

Bobbie, ask away on the questions!!! There are a host of people in here that can answer all your questions!!

You will find this hobby addicting and the hardest part is the waiting game!!

. Welcome Bobby!
BTW, if you are making bigger kits 15L and up, the wine will want to wait much longer than a month of two after bottling regardless of bottle shock. I'm thinking waiting 6 mo for whites and a year or more for reds as a minimum is in the ball park. Meantime you can hang out here, buy more carboys and kits from George, and speculate on how good that last kit you just made is going to be!

BobbieM,

I have wondered about carboy shock. I had to taste some not too longago to make sure there was nothing shocking going on in the carboy.

All was fine

So the carboy minus ~ 3 bottles were transfered into the bottles the next day(3 WKS AGO).....to then overcome bottle shock.....they were doing fine the last time I checked (today!!)....RAMONA

That is good news, so basically I could share the wine with my cousin when he comes to visit towards the end of September. I guess the thing to do while I wait is to get some more juice and start another batch. That sounds like fun. That way there would be an endless supply. I didn't realize how much fun and interesting this was going to be. Thanks for the tips.
Bobbie

Sounds like good rules to follow, I will keep that in mind. While I wait for this batch of bottles its time to start another one.
Thanks again,
Bobbie
