The neck of screw tops is not as thick. Some have done it, but I would not try it. I like my wine too much to risk it!

I did some research on this a couple years ago, and reached the same conclusion as GaDawg. Screw top bottles are not engineered to handle the stress of a cork.

Speaking as one who initially did use some screw tops. There are two problems, one the opening is just a little bit larger, not much, but a little bit. That's the minor problem. The larger is if you take the cork out with a lever corkscrew, that's when the top can break due to the thinner than normal glass.

Can Prosecco bottles be used? They are rather heavy. Wondering if standard corks can be used?
