This is a for what it's worth post.....

I have friend who installs pumps, home and irrigation systems. When he pulls an old pump, with rusted pipe, he rarely put that pipe back in the hole as it's just a matter of time before it rusts through and leaks.

He has stacks of 1" and 1 1/4" pipe. Yes some is extremely rusted but a lot is lightly rusted where it above water. It has little to no value as the only way the scrap yard will take it is if it's cut into short lengths.

I "do him a favor" and haul quite a bit home. Cut it into 8-9' lengths, drill holes in a line for trellis wires and use them. You get 2 posts per length of pipe with 5' left over. I use the short pipes for anchors at the row ends, or?? I seem to find a use for them.

Even rusted, there's way more steel there than a regular commercial post has. A nice "light brown" post looks quite natural in the vineyard too.

Yellow pages list pump installers and if it interests you, check them out.

This is what they look like in use.
