This may be old news to the group, but I haven't noticed anyone mentioning it and thought it may be useful info for some...

Like many here, I have a few (actually, about a dozen) 4-ltr jugs (e.g., Carlo Rossi) that are used regularly as small carboys, or to hold sanitizer or still wine for some period. I never liked using the original metal screw caps, and realized some years ago that the blue screwcaps from Clorox bleach jugs fit perfectly and appear to provide an air-tight seal.
 
Sounds like your jugs take a 38mm cap. The polyseals from your LHBS are probably the best caps. It's a pretty standard size so I'm not surprised that you found something that fits.

When I ran an HHBS in BC, the jugs that people brought in either took the 38mm caps or were too big for any caps that I could find. Most were the 38mm size.
