Earlier this morning I was researching [something us retired guys often get to do :D ] "best water to use for kit wine making". Long and the short of it... the consensus is use spring water! I've been using my well water but felt if I could get spring water cheap enough I'd buy some and use it in this next kit I'm about to start. Well I found that Dollar Tree (never heard of them before) stores sell a spring water called Crystal Geyser @ $1.00 per gallon jug. Seeing that the water gets good reviews and that there was a Dollar Tree store within a easy drive from my home I popped in and bought myself a case (6 1 gallon jugs).

FYI, there is a "Store Locator" function at the Dollar Tree site.

Good to know. I had been buying the Ozarka spring water at Walgreens for almost $2. I also have well water but thought there were probably organisms in there I didn't want to risk making mad.

Interesting. I've never considered that at all. I use my tap water which is actually really hard water. If you don't have spring water, is it preferable to use hard or soft water (though a home water softener.)

When reading a wine recipe book, it said that spring water was best because of the minerals. As for hard or soft, I would think hard. Water softeners use salt if I recall correctly. That may not be the case these days though.
We use a reverse osmosis filter for our drinking water. I tested it once and it completely ripped out the minerals. More than the Brita filter. I went with spring water because I liked the idea of keeping the minerals.

I always use spring water because my water come's off my roof but Its always 99 cents per gallon no matter where I get it. Walmart or my local IGA or even family dollar

I think Walmart is like .89, so if it's convenient you got a good buy.

I don't food shop but for some reason I was thinking bottle spring water was more expensive. Like you my wife pointed out that you can get it cheaper than $1.00 a gallon at other places. Think I maybe saw some distilled water once when my wife "forced" :w me into a grocery store some time back.

Anyway, the price is reasonable (I was thinking around $2.00 per gallon was the going price for spring water) and perhaps more importantly the water got very good reviews. Also, the site mentioned 1 micron absolute filtration - "we are able to remove 100% of the natural occurring particles in our spring water that are one one-thousandth (1/1000) of a millimeter or larger".

Bill,

Dan is right, I buy my spring water at Walmart for 88 cents/gallon.
I also have well water and NEVER use it for my wines.
