Hi Everyone,

For all of you who have pets and like to reward them with treats, be careful of what you are giving them and especially where the treats were made. We used to buy a brand of turkey jerkey at Sam's Club that is made in China. Our little guy got really sick on these things (we almost lost him and had him on IVs for a day) so I looked into it and found that the FDA was investigating the brand and its manufacture.

We have begun to make our own "chicken jerky" for Gina and Louie from chicken breasts that we buy at either Sam's Club or Costco. We slice them very thinly and dry them in the oven at the lowest setting (ours is 170 degrees F) for about 15-20 hours. The pups love them and we are confident in the contents.

Man, for the power used for that long to dehydrate that wouldnt it be way cheaper to use a food dehydrator???

You are absolutely right, Wade. I just have never got around to buying one. We are just making our second batch today. That is exactly when we intend to do.

Unless you still have an oven with a pilot light, then that is enough heat to make jerky. Dang modern inventions took that away.

What a great idea. In the long run it is probably cheaper to buy the chicken breasts and slice thinly. My dogs would love this.

It is a long weekend, I may give this a try.

Just an update on the dog treats and the dy-hydrater. I got the appliance and it works great. We buy the chicken at Sam's Club (this week it was $1.97/lb) and it takes about 18 hours in the de-hydrater. Gina and Louie love them and they are much better for them. Just plain chicken.

Cut those breast into small chunks, boil in some chioken broth along with some finely chopped carrots. When done, add 1 cup wild rice and let simmer until rice is fluffy. Mix in one can whole kernel corn and one can sweet peas and you've got yourself a doggie feast they will love.
