I have successfully used Vivinio for several years, only had one wine that wasn't at least "good".

The drawback is daily emails trying to sell me wine. So far they have failed .... but I'm weakening. Having 20 or 30 cases of wine in the cellar shores up my resolve!

My results with Vivino are more uneven. I check every "HOT DEAL" price they throw out, as well as the ratings, and sometimes have found the wine cheaper online or rated less. Some wines that have been rated 4.2 out of 5 ended up being about a 3 or 3.1 to me, a result of the fact that the ratings come from a wide variety of expertise levels. I find that if I stick to wines rated 4.5 or higher, the results are more predictable in terms of quality. I can filter searches for that parameter. As you mentioned and as so many wine sites do, they do bomb me with emails. I can shut those off anytime, though, and it's sometimes fun just to look at their latest bit of hyperbole in trying to sell a bottle.

All that said, it is a helluva great business model. Wish I had thought of it! Reading the article, I was especially impressed with how they recognized the purchase element early on and adapted in that direction very quickly.
