I found a good way to increase the body and mouthfeel of your wine if it lacks a bit. The Frontenac wine I made last year I needed to pick the grapes early or get none because of wildlife. I found it helped the flavor and aromas if I pour a glass full an hour ahead of drinking. I opened a bottle of it this evening before going out to walk for an hour on the treadmill and poured a glass.

Fast forward an hour................
Back inside, I sit down at the computer to catch up on posts. There is my glass of wine in front of me. I have a few sips of the wine and yes, it tastes better after breathing. Wow it seems to have more mouthfeel and a little more bodies. Bringing the glass to my mouth I swirl it a few times and take a good whiff, getting better, smells a bit more fruity now! Now I go to check it for color, nice color, but it seems to have some floaties in it! No Campden tablet pieces or sediment- floating bodies............ 12 fruit fly bodies doing the backstroke happily. No wonder it had a bit more "little body!" So I grabbed a spoon and saved those pour drunk little ba$tards and finished the glass off.

Thats weird that you say this cause all the sudden they are flying around my house too. I have checked everywhere for any kind of fruit or food that is exposed and I always keep my wine making area as clean as possible which means that you can eat off the floor even though it does not look it as the cheap ass linoleum that I bought has let the glue bleed through. Everytime I sit down with a glass of wine a fruit fly or knat(not sure) flies by and you just cant kill one when your holding a glass of red wine on the recliner over your rug!

It must be all the warm weather bringing them out all of a sudden. Heat wave today- the high hit 25 today, normal low temp 29. Global warming at its best.

I noticed a few really tiny flies under the grow lights...I think they came out of the potting soil when I transplanted the Elderberry cuttings....They seem to be flying around those pots....

I am going to go downstairs and spray again before they find the primary fermentation bucket.....

Edit....it's cold here too....Got up to 30 today and the wind started coming out of the North....nasty wind chill!!!!!!.....Temperatures will be down to maybe 9° by tomorrow night.

We never seemed to have gnats until a friend gave us several potted plants to watch over Christmas while they went south... suddenly, they were everywhere and we traced it to the pots/soil. Apparently they are pretty difficult to get rid of and can spread to other indoor plants if you "introduce" them. Since, I've offered to "watch" neighbors' plants on our deck at Christmas -- that has lessened the takers!

BTW, Appleman, no snow yet, a few flurries here and there, lots of warm days (up into the 40's) and coldest nights only to 27, but the leaves are off and any day we could drop like a rock!

(But I'm ready for global warming!)
