I keep an empty carboy for racking purposes. It is a nuisance to use a carboy brush to clean it after use (rack to spare, rinse/sanitize original, rack back, clean spare).

Now that the Big Mouth Bubbler comes in glass, I was thinking about using it as the spare. The wide mouth makes it much easier to clean.

But, the Glass version of the Big Mouth Bubbler comes with a hole in the lid that fits a #5 stopper. It looks like the lid could take a vacuum. I would need to check out the seal though.

@vacuumpumpman, any thoughts on making a bung that could be used on the Glass Big Mouth Bubbler?

I did a little research on the glass Big Mouth.
I do not carry #5 bungs yet - But I would suggest using a #8 or 8-1/2 with a 1/2'' racking cane to reduce the vacuum and increase wine flow.

How this would work is you would have to hold down the flex racking cane onto the #5 opening making an airtight seal. The bung is soft enough that it is rather easy to do -

You mentioned this in your above post - It is a nuisance to use a carboy brush to clean it after use (rack to spare, rinse/sanitize original, rack back, clean spare).

Have you looked into a http://www.carboycleaner.com/ ?

It really is simple and painless - while transferring - I will be cleaning another carboy and WOW is it easy and efficient ! My only regrets is I did not pick one up when I first started making wine.
