Went to dinner and took a bottle of 1996 Chateau La Conseillante Pomerol. Here is a discription I found on the internet:
When poured in crystal, the wine was an intense, dark garnet. Despite its darkness, the disc (the surface) was very much alive, reflective; light danced off it. Against the light, it was a fairly bright ruby, fine clarity, though not as pure or brilliant as the 1994 Vieux-Chateau-Certan subject of my last review.
The nose. In my many, many years of enjoying wine, I have found few to be as fragrant, as alluring. Perfumed, not in the same way as a Lafite-Rothschild, not quite floral but perfumed with heady, sweet raspberry and oak. Reminiscent of the ’94 Certan but without the candied aspect of the fruit and more demure in displaying its bouquet.
In the mouth. It is very difficult to break down the evolution of flavors from attack to finish as the wine was seamlessly consistent: long clean sheets of red silk of raspberry, touches of red cherry and the slightest hint of sweet woodiness. Beautifully balanced, seductively rounded curves on its medium body. Unlike many Pomerols I have tried, plum did not play a major part in the wine’s performance. It was only in the medium-long finish that I noticed a slight separation of the otherwise seamless flavors: the touches of red cherry exited first, the whisper of sweet wood next fell silent as raspberry and red fruits lingered for a few moments more. Pure. So clean, so elegant.
We found it available on the internet from $135.00 to $199.99, but we paid $89.99 at our local liquor store. It was one of the best wines I have ever had.
