Hi, i have been reading a while and finally decided to join.

I make beer and im ready to start wine.

I found a 'Reserve Du Chateau' kit that sounds good and its only about $57 for a 6 gallon batch.

Are these ok quality kits for starting off with? and is the price fair?

Go to Amazon and search on "Reserve Du Chateau 4 week kit". There you can read the reviews for the particular kit you're thinking of getting. Yes, with free shipping I think one of the 4 week kits would be fine for your first wine making effort. If you find you generally like the product you can next step up to a 6 week kit. Good luck!

I am a newbie, so take this with a grain of salt. I think that making a relatively low-end kit to start with is a fine idea. This will put you through all the paces, learning the procedure, without risking a lot of money. Just understand that the end result will likely not be a real pleasurable wine. Fine for its purposes, but not something outstanding.

As for price, I believe it varies a lot by varietal. Which kind were you planning to make? You can check on eBay, too.

Its a cab sav blend, and those are my two favorite wines along with zin.
Im not expecting alot, and can wait and leave it in bottles or a carboy for a while so that fine with me.

Welcome to WMT! Give it some age and it's not bad for a starter

Hi Zack. Welcome. I have done one of those kits. I did the Orvieto which was really not that great but i admit I didn't do my homework. That type of wine is just too sweet for me. I should have done a varietal that I know I like.
Like others have said, don't expect a $20 bottle of wine, but they are a good way to get your feet wet. You might as well buy another carboy now if you're going to age it more than a few weeks, cause you're going to want to do another right away. And another, and another......

Yes, im not expecting a decent wine, hopefully drinkable though. I ended up with 7 stainless kegs, so i think im going to try and age in one of those. Still need to rebuild 4 of them though. Or i might just get another 6 gal carboy, or 6.5 so i can fit some oak in there.
Thanks for the welcome! Im also taking an online wine class through my local college, only because i couldent attend the in person one.
