How much head room do I want in the carboy when I goto second ferm?

How much head room between the liquid and stopper do I want in the carboy when I go to secondary fermentation?

up to the shoulders (about 4 '' bellow the airlock), so you have room for bubbles and gas

then for clearing/aging you want it to the neck (about 2'' from the airlock)
