A local shop is going out of business. I went in to see, and they are pretty much wiped out. The main thing they have left is a bunch of grape kit concentrates. The 2.5 gal cans... like Johannisberg Riesling, Pinot Chardonnay, and stuff like that. He is offeing to sale them at $9 a can.
My problem is, I'm sure they are about a year old (knowing this shop) Anyone think I should go in and pick them all up? They are the Alexanders brand. But I've barely tried one as a base for my fruit wine once (that is still not finished).

I'm just looking for everyones opinion and/or what they might think about the Alexanders brand...
Thanks,
Ryan

Couldn't hurt to try....

I think they are all pretty much (more or less) the same quality. I really haven't made anything yet with the Vinter's Harvest cans, but I've heard some good stuff about them.

You could consider making a "Strawberry-Riesling" or a "Cherry-Chardonnay" or somehting? You know, use fresh or fresh-frozen fruit to spice things up a bit.

Just some suggestions. Keep us posted as to what you do.

rhosted,

Snap them up at that price. You could do all kinds of fun experiments with them at that price. Icewine, port, sherry, blends, oh think of the fun stuff you can do!

Yes - buy them. You can buy some Vintner's Harvests concentrates and, as Martina suggested, make things like Peach Chardonnay, Blackberry Cabernet, Raspberry Merlot, etc.

And, as Curt suggested, it's a great time to try your hand at port or something similar, if you wish. If nothing else, it will make some cheap wine that you can use for topping up and drinking.

I have used Alexanders concentrates. It takes at least 2 cans to get a good taste in the wine(5 Gal.). $9 isagood price, depending on the variety.I have found them on the web for $12-$18. It might be good to make some combinations, as others have stated.

Thought I would report what I did.
I made it back to the shop today and he was there. I picked up 8 cans of alexanders grape concentrate; some reisling some chablis, and a few other odds and ends. I got a bunch of S locks and bungs, and hydrometers (just in case). All for about 100 bucks for 8 juices and a bag full of new goodies. Couldn't beat the price.

Looks like I've got a bunch of wines on the drawing board now.
