A continuation of the post on Barolo confused instructions:

I hit 1.020 tonight and removed and squeezed the raisins, stirred up the primary well, placed the oak chips in the secondary, and racked.

I had excess in the Primary after racking and decided to sanitize a wine bottle, and racked all that I could to the wine bottle for topping off after I rack again - with the oak chips removed. Got about 3/4 bottle but I don't have an airlock tonight -- Just capped the bottle with a hole in it the size of the hole in the primary and I can get an airlock in the morning from a friend. Put the bottle next to the secondary.

Is this ok tosave with an airlock? Should I keep this excess for that reason? Any one else had this with the MM kits? Still had a little slurry left in the primary that just couldn't scoop up the suction tube -- but it was probably my messy bentonite from the start...

Comments are welcome! Cand J

When you rack from the primary you want to leave the lees behind.

Its ok so save the bottle as its still fermenting. My only concern is the you need to get an airlock asap. The bottle can be used to top off when you transfer again. Remember to leave all the lees behind.

That is absolutely alright to do. I do it all the time. Is that a stopper that goes into the wine bottle with an airlock hole? If so that is what to use. Treat that bottle like you would the secondary. When you rack again, use that to top up.
