My canopy is bigger than your canopy

Having a short growing season I believe in making as much sugar available as fast as possible for my hybrid grapes. So I encourage a large canopy, yet still thin around the clusters. I noticed when I was in California last year the vines were trimmed like poodle dogs. That would never work for my grapes. Am I barking up the wrong tree or is this a good idea?

Apple's and Orange's as Vinifera and Cold Hardy are two different beast. If you look at some of Grapeman's threads you will see his canopies looked just like yours.
