So since I am such a newbie, I was wondering how you all label your carboys, where you keep your notes and other info. I was thinking of a small note book and a small plastic box for other odds and ends. Kinda old school

Well since I'm being nosey, how do you store and organize you equipment , carboy and the like. As of now the small ammount of equipment is in a couple of card board boxes.

I hand a tag on my carboys tied around the neck, with the type wine in it and date begun, after several racking's so my wine is clear of sediments I then bulk age at least a year in carboy making sure to keep fluid in airlock, but I have never done a wine kit, nor a grape wine nore a juice for wine making, I make only what's called country wine , that's made from what I pick myself, pears, apple, elderberry, blackberry, strawberry an so on, but you as I have will figure out some of the best wine makers in the world,(my opinion) are on this site and between them there is nothing that cant be learned from them,,:D
dawg

I use painters masking tape on the carboy. I can transfer the info back to my notes if I feel so inclined. Just started a new spiral notebook. Lots of info in the old one, but most probably couldn't figure my note out. A lot of them are basically just the ingredients. Most of my small equipment is just laid out on a counter, the rest of it is on a peg board. Maybe some in drawers, but don't have many of those in the winery. Arne.

For carboys, I use pens made for writing on glass. Writing wipes right off with a damp finger or paper towel.

Small items are stored in a 'corkidor', so they're sanitized and ready for use at all times. Other stuff is kept in cabinets above the work bench.

Notes: I use an Excel spreadsheet. Each tab is a different batch and contains production notes and recipes as well as tasting notes.

That is exactly what I do. I keep a very detailed notebook with every recipe and wine I have made. After I open said wine, I then go make notes on tastes, etc. about it so I know what to leave alone or tweak. I can refer back to see how I did something then.

Like cmason, I write up notes and the recipe and attach to the carboy with wire through a sheet protector. Easy to add a note after I handle the wine in some way. When I bottle the wine I remove the notes and add the pages to a three ring binder.

It is a little messy right now but here is my wine making area. I keep my records on an old PC using an Excel spreadsheet that I constructed. An ID tag on the carboys, barrels and demijohns link the wine to the spreadsheet. Next to the PC are my barrel aging, empty bottle storage and the bulk aging area where wines age for up to a year and a half under boxes to block out UV light. My supplies are on shelves between my work in progress area and the bulk aging area. Next to the WIP area is a rack with equipment and my sink. Finished wine is stored on the other side of the cellar (the bubble wrap keeps the wine bottles from getting too dusty and provides some friction to keep them from sliding off the shelf by accident).

Thank you all for sharing the what's and how's you are organizing you wine hobby. Everybody has been helpful and willing to share their ideas to such a newbie

One More Notes Idea

I keep this in a 3 ring binder and also use a tag for additions and racking dates on the carboy. I sometimes forget to log something on one or the other, but rarely both.
