Has anyone ever packed wine in their checkin luggage, looks like it is legal just wondering if there are any horror stories out there

I do it all the time. I just recently came back from Napa Valley with some Caymus and Silver Oak. I stopped by UPS and had it packed, (UPS would not ship it because I did not have a alcohol lic). I checked it and it was fine when I reach Anchorage.

I do all the time. I put a layer of cloths down. I roll several bottles individually in t-shirts place them in the center of the suit case, to keep them from banging each other, and put the rest of my cloths on top.

I fly Southwest about every 2 months on average. I always take wine out to friends and family and usually pick up a few bottles of commercial stuff to bring back. I always pack my wine in a FedEx shipper so its about as protected as it can be. Never had a problem once in almost 4 years now and with SWA its free so a win/win situation. The cargo hold is cold at 40,000 ft el also... :p

I guess they could see it when they scan it....seems like it raise some eyebrows

I throw bottles in my luggage all the time. And I've done this from many parts of the world ( Japan, India, china, Europe). Never an issue. The only thing to worry about is the amounts for international customs. And of course the airline fees if your bag is overweight. I admit a few times I did not declare it when I returned. No need to declare anything on domestic flights. I fly mostly delta and just wrap it in clothes. I have heard that united requires it to be in a container but I'm not sure. Check your airline's policies.

I've done it a handful of times and so far, have been lucky. Twice internationally, from Paris and Belize (we honeymooned at two Coppola resorts in Belize and had Coppola wines I hadn't previously seen here in the states).

I'd place them in plastic bags and wrap them in clothes.

When you check it they will ask you "whats in the box"?

Answer, "wine in a FedEx shipper"

They will then ask you to sign a release for damages. They are not responsible for damages but they are responsible if they should lose it somehow. Never had one damaged or lost in forty or so trips both ways again always SWA. They are pretty great at what they do.

Some agents will ask you to hang out for 10 mins just in case something looks weird but I usually just go to the bathroom and then listen to the airport messaging system just in case. I used to see them opened by TSA for a while. If they do they have to leave their love note inside that it was inspected. Have not had one opened in a couple of years I think.

Sounds great, do you have to declare it?

I roll the bottles in my pants, brought back a case from Italy that way. I've not had any problem on domestic flights either.

I have had to pay for overweight luggage but it was worth it.
