I still have one, and so does my Dad.And those 78s were made from a shellac resin that shattered if you dropped it. We also had one of these at my grandmother's:

I vaguely remember a gramophone at my Grandmothers home. Must have been in the mid 40's. She had an album of Caruso records that were about the diameter of a 78 rpm but were about twice the thickness and the material was very rigid. Wish I had them now!My generation had wind up gramophones with a horn!
