I would just like to take a moment to say thank you to all those who participate in answering these threads.

I am new to all of this and everyone is usually prompt and full of useful information that they do not mind sharing with the community.
I was reminded today that every community does not always respond with the warmth of WMT.

I started a thread on another forum asking a few questions, received very few responses, one of which ended with "use common sense."
I had to sit on my fingers to keep from firing off a rude response.

I realize that you guys are a treasure, both in knowledge and friendliness.

Thank you.

Was the other forum also a wine forum? Many of the other sites, non wine related, that I visit are pretty rough and tumble compared to WMT.

It was a brewing site.

Believe me, I can handle rough and tumble and can usually give as good as I get. Some sites I visit, I expect cagematch/thunderdome behavior.

But for a brewing forum where it's clear I'm new and in my opinion, not asking asinine questions....well, I kind of wanted to ask if I had to pay extra for the smart *** or was that free of charge.
I'm just thankful I don't really have to deal with that here!

Winemakers seem to be more of a family, no matter where you find them. Whether at a wine club, or judging or even out in the vineyard. Once you find out someone makes wine, you just feel immediately that you have a connection with them. And I like the idea that our little corner of the world here is peaceful so that everyone can learn. You can't learn when everyone is fighting and hoisting their egos over their heads.

With the exception of the wine press. Those guys can be real a $$ es

I'll also second Jeri's sentiment. This is BY FAR the most friendly, caring, and helpful forum I have found to date.

There's a reason we come back day after day - and it's because of the people on here.

dralarms---I've had that experience over there. I think you have to realize that many on that site have very mad skills because there's many pros there. And they are all pros at high brix, Calif. grapes that need some mean techniques in order to have good and successful ferments in large volumes. On this site, most of us are truly home winemakers. I've learned much in my time on winepress but find I have more of a connection with people on this site. Want to know how much YAN is in each variety of a high brix red?----then those guys on winepress can tell you THAT and more. But it's info most of us don't need or use when we are using the native grapes and fermenting fruit wines.

I will second that comment ^^^^

You know I was telling my wife the exact same thing this morning. Everyone is super friendly.

I figured, it always seems like they are talking down to you.

I know, dralarms. I feel that same thing. Not only talking down to you, but correcting you if you don't say things the correct and FULL way. They believe you should not even post if your knowledge has any weakness in it. And you really get taken to the flogging station if you say anything that is incorrect! Well, that forum has been real quite for over a year---it used to have tons of new people on it all the time. I think we see why it's no longer that way. It has driven many of the original people away, also.

People on this site--without a ton of knowledge---post all the time. If there are any holes in what they are saying, someone just steps in to fill the holes. Instead of criticizing the poster for not giving complete info. This is a good way to learn for the novice---as they say, the best way to learn is to teach. Besides which----I've always had a distain for bullies.

I agree. As a newbie, the members on this site always lend a helping hand and if they can't help they send you to someone that can. No matter how dumb the question is. I'm so grateful to every member on this site.

Actually, I started out, a long time ago in the Winepress forums before they ran me off. Thus, I ended up here and the rest is history. However, I will admit, their knowledge of working with grapes is top notch. When I started my grape wines for this fall I extensively read their grape wine forum and I learned quite a lot. I really wish we had that kind of knowledge on our forums.

However, their is a reason why this is my home forum. I really enjoy the people here and I like our attitude a lot better.

Every forum has it's own personality. WP, as others stated has a lot of knowledgeable folks. Unfortunately, there may be a few that intentionally intimidate members but otherwise there are a lot of good folks there also. That was the very first forum I joined as this one was pretty defunct back then. Thanks to people like Wade and Tom (who was a great contributor before falling ill, but still comes on occasionally) and a few that are no longer here, we turned this forum around over the years. But, it is you the members that make it what it is today. Before Wade came in this site was filled with spam and everything else. It took going through every member and post to clean it up. Even today we are banning several new people nearly every day as they are spammers from around the world. Many times it's you guys alerting us to them.
Thank you, for standing by us and understanding our jobs even if sometimes you might not quite agree or understand why we do what we do.

You have to take what you hear over there with a grain of salt anyway. there are a few over there who really know what theyre talking about and the rest just go around regurgitating the bits and pieces of information that they can remember the knowledgeable ones saying. Eventually it turns into the same thing as that telephone game that kids play.

FYI, next time don't add water lol. Use strong alcohol and evaporate off the majority to end up with an almost pure extract. I make it all the time for medicinal purposes out of "That What Shall Not Be Mentioned Here". :)

Oh, and I'd just like to add my appreciation for this forum, its members and staff to this thread.

I'm with you all on this statement! I've actually never been on another wine or brew forum before. This was the first one I stumbled across and have had my needs met here as far as education and everyone is wonderful. You don't feel "dumb" for asking newbie questions. So again thanks everyone for being so great!

Yeah, I gather that. I'm trying to get into making mead and extracts and researching that other thing that shall not be named, and it is a bit more active in those sections there.
I learned to pretty much avoid the winemaking section after someone told me I gave bad advice all around when I suggested someone stir their primary foam cap back down into the must, lol.
I only had one or two batches under my belt (as oppose to my almost respectable amount of over a dozen now!) so I just let it go.
Whateves...I'm there for info, not lifelong friendship.
