Put this one down under "strange and unusual celebrations"!
They don't call Santa fe the "city different" for nothing! Since 1924 the city or now the Kiwanis Club holds the annual burning of "old man gloom" or "Zozobra". This bizarre event opens the beginning of the cities annual Fiesta celebration each year. The 100ft "puppet" is filled with the fears and worries of locals (adult and children) that are written on paper and collected. The thought is to get rid of your fears and worries by burning them in the gloomy effigy...... The crowd pays 10$ each to watch and the proceeds go to local charities. Its quite a production and the crowd (both adults and children) begin chanting "burn him", "burn him"....... And then they set him on fire......
Its a very strange and unusual "party" atmosphere to say the least. Afterwards the crowd disperses to the "plaza" and the week long Fiesta celebration begins in earnest.
Here is a short [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cePr4txJBw"]YouTube video[/ame] put together by the local newspaper.
