I dont care about what britney spear is doing.
I dont care about what oprah is having for breakfast
I dont care aobut what actor is wearing at what opening
I dont care about which whale beached itself on what beach
I dont care about what singer is screwing what actor
I dont care about what gay person is suing a non gay.
I dont care about half the crap that every one else does
I care about what effects my life , day to day
And belive it are not....nothing in the news does.

Word to that James.

I don't get the newspaper, don't read stories on the internet about people who don't matter. When I'm with someone I turn my cell phone, TV, internet and distractions off so I can pay attention to THEM.

I pay attention to the people around me, assist those that I can with what I have, and prefer small acts of kindness to large ostentatious displays.

That is what effects my life, not the rest.

We watch the news, not to see what's happening, but to feel better about ourselves...because there's some goofy people out there!

news people are just hungry for any thing, breaking news.....
jennifer lawerence cut her hair
breaking news.....kate middleton shows some leg
breaking news....basketball player buys 3 million dollar house..

Lucky you guys... We own a newspaper, so we not only have to be updated on news, but looking for new ones all the time... :ft

I guess I am the contrarian here. Nelson Mandela's death was news that affected me. The news that NY city has charged a man who is mentally disturbed with criminal assault because the two cops who tried to shoot him (when they allegedly thought he was going for a weapon- he was unarmed) shot and wounded two women who were on the street and so the DA is arguing that HE was the cause of the women's injuries, not the cops. That is news that affects me. The news that banks still pay huge bonuses to certain workers but pay tellers so little that the states need to help support them, that is news that I think is important.

Democracy depends on an informed and well-educated citizenry but the information that is presented as "news" seems to be of little use in creating such a citizenry which certainly suits the interests of the folk who would prefer the "democracy" you get when they gerrymander districts and when they demand you "pay to play" and when they call bribery, "lobbying" ...

i agree 100 percent...but who wears what and who makes out with who and who makes millions catching a football is not news.
now who gives millions to charities, thats news.

Barnard,

Nelson Mandela was a great man, no doubt.

But how did his life or death affect me? Not even in the slightest.
He did not change my career or change in any way my daily battle to provide for my family and pay my sky high taxes. Tomorrow, I will still be me, with the same job, at the same pay, with the same "life sucking" level of taxes I need to pay.

It might be different if I lived in South Africa, but as a resident of NJ, USA, Nelson Mandela was just a name in a paper or on a news program.

I do not mean to belittle Mandela, I just want to state my perspective.

I hear you but Mandela spent 27 years in prison after facing the possibility of being executed by a racist regime who then went on to become the president of a country and refused to take revenge on the racists that treated the majority in ways that no one would treat an animal and indeed created a society that found ways to reconcile and restore the wretched and the downtrodden with their oppressors in ways that avoided bloodshed and revenge and so showed all of us how human beings might live and act. People talk about forgiveness and about goodness, but here was a man who exemplified such a life in the face of unconscionable barbarity. And then when he would certainly have won the next election he chose to step down because of his belief in democracy and the need he saw to develop a cadre of people who would be elected because of what they can do and not because of their charisma. I don't worship heroes. We all can be heroic we need to be but Mandela is up there with Gandhi and MLK. And the world today is poorer because of his passing.

While Mandela had no affect on me directly, I believe that he affected the world as a whole. Which in turn will affect others and eventually change those around me.

For instance, Gandhi had no affect on me, yet his teaching affected MLK, who took his teaching and put them into use, which made changes and so on and so forth.

sometimes the biggest changes are the ones we don't notice!

then again as a history buff it all affects me!

“It always seems impossible until its done.”

I am going to pluck something out on my guitar, seems like there is a song in here.

I agree with you 100 percent...
He was a bandwagon that politicians, musicians, actors jumped on to promote there own self...
Look at south africa today....a very booming, rich economy, with no poverty,no racial attitude, no hunger , lol, anddddddddddddd
water they can not drink..
lol
it was and still is a political joke.......
give the famous something to ride, and they will ride it to till its dead.
and they did.

even today, look at all the people paying tribute, etc to a man that never did anything for this country, there still riding his coat tails...
this one is making a tribute, that one, etc...all the rappers are coming together for a man they dont even know who was..lol
ridiculous.

C'mon, James. Are you referring to the attention paid to Nelson Mandela? Do you seriously think he is not worthy of this tribute, just because he is not from the US? Whether or not you realize it, he made YOUR life better.

I agree Paul. People may not realize what Nelson Mandela achieved but I believe he enriched everyone's lives

I know this is a post a few days old, but I'm hoping those that think Mandela did nothing for them have seen some insights in the news these past few days as to what he did for everyone ( either directly or indirect )
