I was there yesterday and picked up a 2012 Amarone for $16.99. :HB On the opposite end of the spectrum, I also picked up some Bogle Phantom for $5.99. I'm looking forward to trying both of them.

You saying your spectrum only runs from $6-$17? LOL

How does the $17 Amarone taste?

Well, yesterday it did. :D

I'll let you know in two years, when I open it. :)

Actually, I'm probably going to go back and get a couple more bottles so I can let some sit for a while. 2012 is just too early for an Amarone, but I'm very curious to see what its like.

OK, I cracked the Bogle a little bit ago. As expected, insanely dark, a tad off dry (though less than I was expecting, which is good). Flavor and nose exactly as I anticipated, but not quite as robust as I would have thought. Overall, a great bottle of wine for six bucks though.

Yes, please do keep us posted! Surely you'll open one Amerone and stash the others for aging, right?
I wish we had a TJ's nearby!

Got a friend that goes to the store and buys cases of trader Joe's and saves me all his empties. Just picked up 5 cases from him just the other day.

I would open it now and taste it, if it is good, get a case. It won't be the same price after two years.

OK. Today is SWMBO's birthday. We're going out for a date night this weekend, but of course, I'm making her a nice dinner tonight. I thought for sure she'd ask for chicken and cheese enchiladas (her go-to request). Instead, she said how about a nice grilled filet. Um, sure! Anyway, I made a garlic paste and added to it some herbs de Provence, olive oil and S&P. Got the steaks rubbed up (ribeye for me). Wrapped some asparagus spears in provolone and proscuitto and some others marinating in a nice italian vinaigrette. I decided I needed a good Italian red wine to go with this meal, so I decided to pop the Amarone. I poured a glass with my Vinturi and the rest through the Vinturi into a decanter.

First glass: fruit forward, bold acidity, but not too much tannin. Solid notes of oak and tobacco; maybe some mushroom in there too. I'd say this is worth every one of the 1,699 pennies I paid for it. I wouldn't say it's the perfect definition of the style (yet), but I like what I see so far - a little more time should do the trick. I'm going to try and go back for a few more bottles to let some age a bit.

Edit: merely at the end of the first glass (bottle's been open about 25 minutes), and tannin is starting to show through.

.Well Jim
I stopped at my local trader Joes and found the same bottle of Amarone, so we picked up several bottles and let them rest for a bit longer - per your suggestion
