So what would you do if this part time job ad was in your local paper?

I have the background they are looking for but not sure about the time. I am plenty busy with my day job as well as my own wine making duties, tending to the 30 vines that were planted this Spring as well as all my other gardening/home owner duties.

Still, taking this hobby/obsession to the next level is calling me! I wish they were a little closer, the winery is 35 miles away from me on the road to Taos. A beautiful drive but just a bit too far unless I was retired.

Tempting to say the least!

Aw go ahead and go for it. Then you can be insanely busy like I am! I came in for a 10 minute break and to drink a "gasp" beer. Naturally I need to check in here. Now back out to finding the last row of vines I am training to the trellis. My eyes are almost shut from allergies, but I keep on going.........................

Willsboro is almost 30 miles away and I take care of that vineyard 2-3 days a week. It has proven to be a very valuable experience and opportunity to meet a lot of nice people and industry leaders (I got called upon toparticipate in a Roundtable discussion with some US Congressmen this coming week). I'm sure this could work out for you also.

I seriously do not know how you fit it all in Rich!

At 51 I only have ~ 9 more years to go for full retirement at the lab so I am looking at what to do with with my "life after the lab" so to speak.

This could be it!

actually you have a quality that they didnt ask about..and that would concern me.....they did not ask about or mention even casually one thing...passion * which you have)

they did a job request.......i wouldnt hire anyone for something like that unless i made them come try my wines....talk to me...see if they had life in them and if they had passion......and if i was the job seeker, i would interview them to see where their 'life' was.....not saying they are not....full of life....but when you write an ad, i think it should be about passion and life.....not all technical///just my opinion and a subject worth talking about

I agree Al.

The sad thing is he lost his chemist/assistant wine maker last week due to an unexpected death.

Not sure if it was heart attack or perhaps stroke. Anyway I think he is desperate to get some help ASAP.

Crush is literally weeks away and the owner is on his own....

mind a suggestion? go stop in their tell him who you are...you MIGHT find that he wants YOU and can hure someone else to do the regular and mindane stuff...and you can work your way to that place in time for retirement....a person w LIFE is invaluable and worth even having part time for what they instill in an organization

Al, I agree with you. Being in HR for the last 12 years we looked exactly for what you said. Pasion and ambition. We could teach the people everything else. You can't teach someone to have passion and ambition.

Again Father Al says it all. Mike even if you went in for a tasting and struck up a conversation...Man I wish I was retired now as that is the dream job I always wanted. Then ask about the possibilities of just coming down to help out at special events and at harvesting/bottling times. Doinf this off and on over the years and learning the business who knows what will be available in nine years. Maybe a partnership!

People like character.
I landed a really good job after going into a job interview and goofing off the whole time. (true story)

Mike.... They will see what you are all about and listen to your needsin order tomake it work with your current job. IMO

Mike

Ya just gotta go for it!!!! Do as Father Al suggests and you just might be surprised with what you get. Maybe just maybe you can get a part-time after hours or all night position - who needs sleep. Maybe you can even tow down your RV and have a place to stay and a write-off. At least, you need a face-to-face meeting with the owner and try some of their wines. Keep us advised.

i can see it now...he goes to work his reg job....then check sin w his new passion job...then check on his wine...and last but not least...hugs his wife when he returns home as he looks past her and out the window to see his new vines and how they are doing.....
