Hey everybody,

I want to do a blackberry port using Oregon blackberries. How do you know when they are ready to pick?

I assume most people do it from looks or taste. Is it better to test them a different way?

taste

heard that you should be standing in water (river) when harvesting to get the best blackberries

They should come off the branch easily and not have to be pulled. You should basically see some on the ground from falling off.

OK... Thanks

I know some people say that "when fruit tastes good, isn'talways the best time to make wine out of it"

I can't think of a single fuit where that wouldn't be true. You want ripe fruit since that has the most flavor and sugar. The one thing that might not be perfectwhen thetaste is best might be the acids.

Somewhere I saw a chart that shows the average sugar levels in different fruits, can measure with a refractometer to check ripeness. Wish I had time this morning to find it, maybe someone will post today.
