I was at a Christmas party over the weekend and this very involved home winemaker proceeded to tell me about his new fermenters he buys at Pet Smart. YES thats right Pet Smart. It's food grade and he said it holds about 12 gallons. He adds a spout on the bottom and an airlock on top. The wide mouth makes it easy to clean. I have not looked at them yet but some day when I'm there I just might.

$40 for the 50lb which might hold 6 gallons is not what I would call cheap especially when you have to modify it which cost even more $$$.

Here is 25L ready to go for $50 at a large LHBS in the DFW area.

Food grade 55 gallon drums go for about 5$ around here. But cant afford the ingredients on a batch that big....... YET!

Like I said I am just relaying what I was told and assumed that was the container. I have not checked it out myself yet. The blue 55 gallon drums are great for holding short term or transporting wines.

I inherited a smaller version of this and it worked fine for a while. The fellow who drilled the lid did a poor job and I wasn't happy with the bung seal so I just use it for storage of dry goods now.

These are on Craigslist all the time for $19 ea. 20G and they are food safe. I think they had dextrose in them originally.

Mike -
I will have to keep my eyes open for a couple of these -

I do have some 15 gallon fermenters, the only nice thing about then is that they fit inside one another

Well I was near Pet Smart today and had to go in and look. The containers that hold 50 lbs were on sale. I am guesing they would hold a good 12 gallons. The nice features were the wide mouth top for easy cleaning, square sides making it easier to line up more of them on a bench and very light weight. I don't have a need to buy any but they certainly open another option for the person looking for something along these lines.

Those look great. But I've never seen them around here. Do you have business in your area that uses the dextrose?

Sorry , just looked again it was lactose, not dextrose. No idea where they came from originally.
