Anyone make wine from scratch and make wine from kits? what's the main difference in final product assuming several years of aging for both.

Jorma

Lots of folks make both. For me, the biggest difference the amount of time and work involved. Depending on what type of scratch wine I'm making, there can be a lot more ingredient additions involved. I'm glad for the experience of many kits when I make a scratch wine. I'm also thankful for all the bottles of kit wine we can consume while waiting for a scratch wine to be ready to drink.

I do both, cant seem to age either one!

My feeling is, for grape wines, I simply don't have access to the same quality grapes that the kit makers do. I was a member of a club in Houston 20+ years ago, and we bought 5 tons of one varietal rom one vinyard each year. Who do you think got the best grapes - MM/RJS/WE, or us?

We get grapes, once a year, from someone who has them in their yard here. We supplement with juice of some kind. Otherwise, all our scratch batches are from other fruits and veggies. I LOVE choke cherry wine!!!
