I would think that if you buy an hydrometer (about $7 or $8 ) and use it to measure the density of the wine (the specific gravity) from that you could calculate the residual sugar. I think too - although I have never used these but the tablets you can buy at pharmacies (Clinitest , I think they are called, to test for sugar in urine) can also be used to measure the sugar in wine...
