Attended the NY BG wine tasting event today. It was fun. The cost (after admission or general membership) was $5.00 for a souvenir (plastic) snifter glass.. and all the tasting you wanted. The site was the Botanical Gardens and they are always beautiful.
The mead samples were at least as good as my own - certainly sweeter and very drinkable. But the ciders surprised me. Made by the oldest winery in NY (Brotherhood) they had no significant apple taste. I don't know how you can make cider that does not taste of apples unless you are using too vigorous a yeast or the apples are sold for eating and not cider... I don't think that my ciders are wonderful but they are all far better than those I tasted today. I also tried some Malbec but I have nothing to compare that too as I have yet to make wines from any variety of grape
