I started the Winexpert Selection Premium White Zinfandel on Friday, 10/12 and transferred to the carboy for my secondary on Sunday, 10/21. The SG has been right on track and the temperature has been a steady 72 degrees. Everything seems to be progressing fine. Obviously, I haven't stabilized as of yet.

The wine started out somewhat "pinkish" in color like what I think a White Zinfandel should look like. Since yesterday (10/22) the wine has started "darkening" and now looks almost like a "blackberry" color.

Has anyone else experienced this and is this normal for this kit?Edited by: tcb54

This is normal. When you are looking at that much bulk of wine, colors will appear deeper and more intense. Once in the bottle or glass, they lighten considerably.

The carboy with the White Zinfandel is sitting right next to a carboy with California Pinot Noir and they look almost the same. Is it going to lighten up that much when it is bottled?
I have made Riesling and Muller-Thurgau and they are always a lot lighter than this. I guess I expected White Zinfandel to be like the Behringer or Sutter Home I have purchased in the past.

Has anyone else made this kit and experienced this?

I have made this kit and many of the WE White Merlots is the past and don't remember if the color looked darker thana Sutter Home.I wouldn't get to concerned yet since you haven'tadded fining which will change the look as it clears.

I have some carboys that have a slightgreenish tint to them and this will also change the way the wine looks.

tc,

I have made many White Zins and the color will be beautiful, a ruby rose color. The comercial White Zins "pale" in comparison. Everyone who has had my wine raves about the color and how much better it is than any WZ they have ever had. You will be very happy!!!

It sounds like the kit makes more of a sweet rosé. Pour me a glass!Edited by: dfwwino

Here's a few pictures of the White Zin (and some others) to show what it looks like. These were taken today (October 25, 2007):

In looking at the lees, it should be lighter than the others, but certainly not what I would call a White Zin.Strange. Have you checked out the product description on Winexpert's website? If I were to guess, I think it will be just like a rose.

Wow...maybe it was mislabeled and is actually an Old Vines Zin? Did it come with an F-Pack?

Edit: I also wanted to add, that I've never seen a White Zin that color! You were right to question it. I'd call the WE 1-800 # as well. You might want to send them a pic of that "white zin".Edited by: Dean

Dean,

It does have an F-Pack, and it is labeled as White Zinfandel as well.

I'll call them tomorrow. If I can speak with someone I will definitely send them a photo if they want.

I'll postany information that I find out from them.

ThanksEdited by: tcb54

Here is a picture of one of my WZ and you can see it is a darker shade than most of the commercial ones. Take a sample out of your carboy and hold it up to the light and see if it looks lighter to you. I remember the last one I made seemed really dark in the carboy too. Hope this helps you!!!

It does look pretty dark in the carboy buy ith the lees and against a dark wall this could be deceiving. I would do as Ramona said and pull out a glass and take a pic to see what it looks like.

Ramona,

Thank you very much for the picture. That's really a beautiful wine you've got there...

After looking at Ramona's photos, this might be a great kit to make into a semi-dry rosé, by adding just part of the F-pack. It sure looks like more of a rosé than a white zin.

I just spoke with Linda at Winexpert. She looked at the pictures and said that everything was fine. She asked me for the code number of the wine and said that some years the grapes are a bit darker than others. She said that when I stabilize and add the F-Pack it should gradually start lightening up.

Basically,Linda told me that everything was on track and to "relax." A really nice and helpful person...

Thanks to all of you who responded and I'll post more photos after I stabilize and it lightens up.

I have made about 3 0r 4 of the VR WZ and they have been excellent and even with the f pack it wasn't very sweet. I sweetened it with simple syrup to get it where it is with the commercial WZ. Especially for the girls at work who haven't developed a taste for dry wines. I can't keep it..everyone loves it.

Ramona

If enjoy this kit I would suggest trying the White Merlot as it is cheaper and a bit less sweet.
