    Home Vineyard for Central Illinois

That’s not bad growth for year one. None of my grapes hit the top wire until year two. The trellis wire you have is good. I like the adjustable strainers for maintaining wire tension but the wire vice devices should be fine for such short runs.

Anyone Wax their Fruit Press Stakes?

I would worry that a finish, even wax, can hold moisture in the wood. Raw wood is traditional. It gets wet and stains, but dries out

I just finished up today… well I would have but I’m 9 pc short in the laundry room. This is my first time installing LVP… I like it! I looked back and the basement was poured on September 5… it’s been a long year but we’re getting close. I hope to have it move-in ready by the end of September.

Time to find the wild elderberry

I just assumed it was birds. I never really looked on the ground. But yeah, they definitely don’t stay on the bush long once ripe!

Time to find the wild elderberry

Well I’ve been busy with the house so I wasn’t paying attention… one day the berries at the end of the driveway were almost ripe… then they were gone. I checked all my spots the next day and 99% of them were gone. Those birds are damn efficient 😕 Maybe next year

    New Maryland Vineyard

I am using DeerStop. It’s not that stinky I think it repels by taste not smell. It does say to spray it on the plants.

Perhaps if you spray the vines when they are young then switch to spraying around them after veraison it would work.

Yeah you have to keep up with it… at least early on. They seem to learn and I have been able to ease up after a while. I haven’t noticed problems with lingering taste on veggies… haven’t tried grapes. Like you, my goal is to fence the vineyard/orchard/ garden area. For me that’s only about...

Dang. Have you tried a deer repellent? That, with the nets may work. The deer need to learn that they aren’t worth the effort. I use the repellent alone to keep them from eating the tender young vines. I am using the insect netting… it’s pretty tough stuff so I think it will protect the fruit...

    Newbie

I do add k-meta when I rack. Many add k-meta every three months. Some rack on that schedule as well. However, If a wine is off the gross lees and bulk aging I won’t rack it again until bottling. As long as the carboy is topped up and the air lock is maintained, I feel safe stretching the...

Welcome back. Are you planning a hobby vineyard or a commercial one?

I am new to wine making, not very new to grape growing.

Welcome. There are many winemakers here with home vineyards. Making wine from your own grapes is very fulfilling.

Sorry to hear about that. The crisis and the grapes. I hope all is well. I was surprised when I heard deer eat grapes… you’re not the first to report it.

😱 I quite literally could not live in that house! I would tear out the cabinets and prepare food on a card table before I would accept that!

Why would an entire vine lose all its leaves?

That’s my first thought. That or some root or trunk disease. .

So far I have been getting by with spraying deer repellent, but you need to be vigilant about it early in the season. This year I got lax and had deer strip almost all the new growth from a couple rows in a single night. My long-term goal is a permanent fence for the vineyard.
