    Blueberry Wine experiment

I make about 30 gallons of blueberry a year. I usually get my berries from an LHBS and they go for $25 for 30 lbs. This yea I'm gonna make a few batches with a cabernet wine kit. Blueberry also loves heavy oak.

    Not topping off barrel?

I have a favorite local winery, the owner and I love to "talk shop". He kept teasing me about a awesome new wine and finally a few weeks ago he dropped it- its a Merlot that spent 30 months in a barrel. The wine is fantastic, the first Merlot that I actually was blown away by. One strange thing...

RJS Craft Winemaking - Grand Cru - Merlot

I have a 6 month old batch I'm ready to bottle, compared to my other kits there is very little flavor. I'll see what a year bottle aging does

Argument for using bag for grape pack in primary

I'm on my 4th kit, all have been done with the EM style and it really works. The wine taste completely drinkable after the EM. I read about guys not using the supplied bag for your grape pack. I decided to try it..............never again!! I lost over a gallon of wine to the massive amount of...

    Oak Toast for Cabernet Sauvignon

I tried the StaVin Med + oak and the wine ended up tasting like a campfire-not a fan of the smokiness. I prefer med for the vanilla

    Chile - Spring 2018 - Malbec - Petit Verdot - Syrah

My LHBS called me and said their supplier called and said Petit Verdot was a no-go from their supplier in Chile, he wasn't satisfied with the crop. So I subbed in Cab Franc. BTW it was Keystone in Bethlehem in Pa.

Saw this and had to try it

Thanks for the report Doug, I'm just hesitant to make any all juice wines anymore, they all turn out flat and lifeless. Not sure what to add to it.

First bucket of juice - Chilean Carmenere

Heatherd I've tried ordering that grape additive pack for weeks and the site is so buggy my order keeps cancelling itself, worse yet they can't seem to fulfill any orders yet I get all kinds of spam from them now. I'd be very careful ordering from them.

Saw this and had to try it

I told myself not more juice buckets but this got my curiosity up, i just got to figure what to add to it. Interesting since i may plant some of these grapes.

    2018 Grape Season Underway

I'll ask the boss, we are planning to go but since its only about an hour drive for us we might just make it a day trip. Still might be fun to stay the night we just need a babysitter for the dogs/cats.

    New Pa small backyard winery

Talked with another winery owner here yesterday, very good conversation. I finally asked him if you had one Vine to plant what would it be? Without hesitation he said "Cab Franc" on a 101-14 root stock. However Double A is out of that combo this year so I'll probably just throw in some Marquette...

    What R you doing today?

Been chopping down trees like a madman to make room for my blackberries, wild black raspberries and hopefully some grape vines. Then my new toy came, a wood chipper. Assembled the beast and fired it up....................man what a loud BEAST!! Free mulch as much as i want now....lol

What’s your 5 yr winemaking plan??

This year I plan on planting 10 vines each of 3 hybrids, probably Marquette, Noriet, and not sure about the third. Then I'm gonna steal another member's plan and propagate the vines over the next few years. I have room in my yard for around 80 to 100 vines but I'd better 1. Get more friends who...

WineXpert Recommendation on long to age in barrel

I've always heard you should never put kit wine on the same barrel as non-kit wine that has gone thru MLF?

    2018 Grape Season Underway

Just looked it up, I'll be on Houston the week before but that weekend is clear for now, its less than an hour away for us. Looks like fun

I'll take a 25 if you still have one-plus i live in the Allentown area and could certainly meet you in the Philly area

WineXpert Recommendation on long to age in barrel

I've over-oaked (just a tad) wines before and after 6 months little to no oak was tasted, if you bottle age for a year I doubt you would have any effect of a slight over oaking. I have one batch of Mixed black that i REALLY over oaked(underestimated the power of Stavin oak cubes) and i just...

    New Pa small backyard winery

My best 120 foot by 100 foot area is north south facing on a gradual slope. the soil is rocky and well drained. BTW I'm just down the street from you at Weathered vinyards!! In fact I did a carboy swap with one of your employees here. I'll probably start out with 20 or so hybrids to get my feet...

    New Pa small backyard winery

I've lived in this area for 20+ years and really don't ever remember it getting colder than single digits. it certainly never gets -15 to -20 degrees

    New Pa small backyard winery

Thanks for responding. there are several wineries here and they grow Cab, Pinot, Merlot plus some Pa stalwarts like Chamboricin. I'm just wondering guys who have grown vinfera vs hybrids in this area. BTW I'm in zone 6a but all Double A recommends for that is -30 hybrids...strange. I'm pretty...
