    Straining Bags

I'm trying to make sense of this There are many folks here using paint bags for straining grape juice or wine and no one is concern that these are not food grade material. Someone said that he saw a label on them saying HDPE. Really, since when is paint food product?

    Straining Bags

Okay, I heard horror stories like that, but some of us are not commercial winemakers and we are in full control of what comes in contact with the wine we make. After all, we are the ones who drink our wine, together with our families and friends. Certainly anyone can choose to do whatever they...

    Oak infusion

I wonder why someone would soak oak cubes or chips in flavorless alcohol, unless there is some magic to it, I don't know about?

Has anyone use CVRP yeast and did it work for you? Thanks

The necessity of storing corked bottles on their side a busted myth?

I totally agree and cellar humidity along with quality corks is very important I had some bad corks and even though I kept the wine on the side, due to low humidity, I had some leaking bottles

    Malolactic fermentation, should I?

What combination of yeast and MLF bacteria did you use? Thanks

    Malolactic fermentation, should I?

One of the critical parameters with co-inoculation is PH. If higher than 3.5 the MLF bacteria may metabolize the sugar and the primary fermentation may get stuck. Any of you had successful co-inoculation with high PH must? If yes, how high? Thanks

    Is there a better way?

My favorite method to remove lables is to put the bottles in a 200F oven for half hour . Most labels will peel of easyly, other need some soaking, depending on what kind of glue they used.

    Beneficial/cover crops for small vineyards?

I took similar steps to keep weeds in check, except for the pesticide. Covered the rows with weed blocker and wood chips, but after two three years the weeds started growing on top of it. Now I just do hand weeding (I have only 49 vines) and this keeps me pretty busy. This year I planted clover...

    Beneficial/cover crops for small vineyards?

If you have a small vineyard, cover crops are easier to manage and beneficial. If you choose the right Clover, it will keep weeds away and it will reseed, as well as provide Nitrogen to your soil. The crimson clover is a good choice, it is not too tall and looks nice too. Don't use any...

    Cold box wine storage project

Hi all, The CoolBot is a great innovation, but too expensive ($350). If cost is not an issue, go for it, but here is a much cheaper solution you may want to consider: Since most AC unit temperature sensors are thermistors you can simply change the value and fool the controller so that the...

    My version of the enolmatic

Thank you stickman, you are right on. I believe this is very important. A friend who has hands-on experience with the Enolmatic, came over today and told me the same thing.

    My version of the enolmatic

I made some changes to my setup and thinks look better now. I added a speed controller for the vacuum pump and now I can control the flow. If I slow down the flow rate, the fill level can be adjusted to around 2" but if I do not remove the bottle immediately, it has the tendency to overfill...

    My version of the enolmatic

I did some more testing today and it looks like I have problems with the level fill too. The level is not consistent and the adjustment on the top doesn't make much difference. My level is about 1-1/2" no matter what I do and this is too high, it touches the cork. I wonder if the original works...
