    Affordable grapes in the southeast?

I haven’t, Tatmia. Thank you for the tip. Jbo

    Taste

Don’t be jerky Nicola. It’s unbecoming. You basically said, “My drink tastes funny. What’s wrong with it?” We didn’t even know what you’re drinking. How were we supposed to know? Joe made a perfectly reasonable observation. People here are happy to help, but they need at least some kind...

    RJ Spagnols RJS Cru International

I did mine with a Nebbiolo too. The neb is good, but it’s much lighter than I expected. Jbo

    RJ Spagnols RJS Cru International

At the moment enjoying a glass of the Zinfandel at one year young and only two months in the bottle and it’s one of my favorites to date. That’s compared against many that were more “premium”. Jbo

    Affordable grapes in the southeast?

Haha. Wish I had space for a pallet. I have debated doing a drum, but even that is asking a lot of my space. :) I guess I’m hoping to get into a group buy or have someone tell me there’s a distributor with a cold storage within an hour or two where I could pick some up “direct”. Or even...

    Affordable grapes in the southeast?

Anybody found an affordable way to source vinifera grapes in the Southeast(Atlanta area)? I just can’t find a way to make it equitable. By the time shipping is added, grapes(frozen) are quadruple the cost of even premium kits. I could maybe get myself to pay double, but quadruple really...

    New Winexpert Kits

Yep. That was an odd, random seeming one. I was happy to see that no one really took the bait. Jbo

    New Winexpert Kits

This seems to have been directed at my comments, but I’ve never said I hate them. I do wish they made wine I perceive to be better. I also noted that I continue to make them for everyday plonk. And I’d like to continue to make them better. The fact that people don’t think you can rival Opus...

    New Winexpert Kits

I’ve made kits across the spectrum and I’d compare any of them to. $4.00(US) bottle. I tell people who ask about my hobby all the time: I can make better beer than I can buy. I make the wine because I enjoy having my own. The only wine I’ve made that would compare favorably against your...

    New Winexpert Kits

I’m in the “they all taste similar” camp, but I do also believe they taste at least slightly different. I’m sure they likely have different juices. I have noticed, though, that more and more, the descriptions include the word “style” suggesting it really isn’t the named grape that’s foremost...

    New Winexpert Kits

I, for one, am willing to give them a try if I can find them for the right price. Having spent a fair amount of time corresponding with one of their technical advisors some time back, I can see the logic of what they’re trying to do. I’m skeptical, but I’ll try it. They are in this to make...

    Kumquat wine help please

Oh. Sorry. More specific to your question. I would absolutely start with yeast rather than rely on natural flora. Beyond that, maybe some else will come along. Citrus wine isn’t really my thing. Jbo

    Wine kits on sale

Y’all might try Hearts Home Brew for RJS stuff. Not sure what shipping is like but they have the best prices I’ve seen in store. I buy a few every time I’m close. Jbo

    Help

I agree with the paper filter idea. You could also carefully decant your wine. not much you can do about wine oxidizing in an open bottle(except drink faster). Though I do sometimes open a 750ml bottle and pour into a swing top beer bottle to the very top. The wine in the swing top bottle...

So you insist on drinking your kit wine early . . .

That’s interesting advice, AJ. I need to do a blind tasting to see how much difference I think it makes for me. Thanks. Jbo

So you insist on drinking your kit wine early . . .

9). Don’t add (much) extra oak. This is surely the first tweak most people make with kits. But if you put too much, the only solution is time, so if you haven’t dinked around with the oak and have a really good idea what you’re doing, a quick drinker isn’t the best place to experiment.

So you insist on drinking your kit wine early . . .

Thought I’d start a place where we could record suggestions for making a “quick drinking” kit. The question of which kit gets asked a lot, but there are things you can do as well. Here are a few of my notes. Add yours. 1) Lower your expectations a little. Seriously, if it takes a year or...

Good point, CT. I just assumed it was a kit. Jbo

RJS Cru International Meritage (Canadian Okanagan)

Final follow up on mine. Attempt to re-ferment failed(as pretty much expected). Still sweet. The chickens liked it. :) Jbo
