Strange taste in wines fermented from juice buckets...

I've heard people say they could taste 'plastic' from a bucket, I cannot. Where is this from, I don't know the branding. Was this hot press? Were the other buckets also cabernet sauvignon? Could it be the grapes themselves?

    specific gravity of residual sugars

I was hoping for a simpler solution for starting before I taste, but there doesn't seem to be one. @mainshipfred may have the closest idea.

    Other red wine kits poll

The 'style' also covers hybrids in the mix, like a Ruby Cabernet , or minor grapes blended to match what people think of as 'cabernet'. It also can allow for random grapes in the field. I do not know if labeling on a concentrate is the same as for a wine. >75% Cabernet Sauvignon is "Cabernet...

    specific gravity of residual sugars

I have looked through a bunch of threads and didn't find info - what is the specific gravity of certain residual sugar amounts? I am trying to get wine finished for holidays and have a short time frame. Unexpected group visit on the 26th, it usually isn't until January. Uncle and aunt like a...

Apple mead w/ Oriental 5 spice

I would love to hear recipe details if you have them. I don't know what level to start.

    Help with small vineyard planning

Many people do produce their own if price sensitive. I am trying a grafting project later to make my own vines, but I will be very small. It's more an issue of finding what i want when i want it, and since I am just doing a backyard , I can be slower. Same as my apples. Do be careful of what...

Apple mead w/ Oriental 5 spice

I.use the spice blend in cooking- including pie. Hadn't thought of this in a mead, but sounds like it would taste great. I'd start with less- depending on your blend may have more of one flavor than another blend. I am not as fond of star anise as ginger.

    Wanted Grape cuttings wanted

I would like any type of wine grapevine cuttings you have as pruning happens this winter, will pay shipping. I'd like to try improving my skills and use my grafting tool on grapes. It worked pretty well on apple last year, but I'd like to improve with grape before relying on anything actually...

    Post a photo, any photo

I am so sorry, Varis. Pets are the most devoted family members, and it is so hard. I've had to make the same decision a few too many times. It never gets easier.

Other If you had one yeast for bold reds

No, taste is probably fine - it won't clear. But I am comparing to some very fast clearing/ flocculating yeasts. Might be something that I am doing? Or just the batch of yeast. Peach I did use four yeasts in four batches. Premier Rouge is the one that won't clear. QA23 was almost immediate...

Other If you had one yeast for bold reds

I've never done a kit- went crazy on juice buckets and have tried a few from fresh grape. I may need to stop, I don't drink that fast! There were definitely differences in buckets I split between yeasts, and although I blended later, I've figured out what 1 or 3 I like from what shops say will...

I tried it after you did, and love it. Really nice in Tempranillo and blackberry.

Other If you had one yeast for bold reds

Everyone here is pretty open about what they do. Who would we be competing with? And we want you and us to drink better wine. For kits, try some things. Yeast is cheap at a local wine supply, and I always get a few packs to go into free shipping territory online. ScottLabs handbook is great...

    Custom cork?

I had some larger neck diameter bottles - thought they were wine but were likely from liquor. I got something like a t-cork for them, which fit more with what I put inbthem anyway. I opted to use them for liqueur and fortified wines that would not be finished as quickly. I am not finding them...

    Clearing -sweetening order

I have a few gallons of Gewurztraminer I need to finsh with and bottle by the 26th. Normally I would have until late January, and I intended to leave this to sit an extra month. Somehow everyone has a clear work schedule, so I need to move. This wine needs to be sweetened- I have Riesling...

LD Carlson 'Yeast Nutrient' may be as much as 5/6 urea and provide north of 500 YAN at package dosing

I've been really confused here, but not really surprised at lack of thought. If a person only wanted what was allowed by the TTB, they should read and follow those regs. Anyone who actually bought the LD Carlson 'yeast nutrient' product can see that it contains urea and DAP, had that on jars and...

LD Carlson 'Yeast Nutrient' may be as much as 5/6 urea and provide north of 500 YAN at package dosing

The company that sells it to you should be expected to provide MSDS if asked, wholesalers no. Same document, different responsible party.

    Marquette juice bucket

Walkers has been mentioned quite a bit before, you can do a search on the forum for them. I am not sure there is a bad review, other than the shipping cost. Anything not a concentrate is high. I have wanted to get some of the hybrid juices to try before planting, but have not yet. Walkers is...

LD Carlson 'Yeast Nutrient' may be as much as 5/6 urea and provide north of 500 YAN at package dosing

Everything I see from recently and years back shows LD Carlson 'yeast nutrient' is DAP and urea. Several online sellers actually indicate that on the listing, and apparently LD Carlson wholesale site links to separate MSDS for urea and diammonium phosphate, or did at the time. Composition etc...
