    4 gallons wine...can i rack to 5 gallon if...?

Robert, IMO, I would get a couple of 1 gal. glass jugs and put the excess in those. The dry ice idea may work for a while, but every time you want to rack you'll need to buy dry ice again. I have a CO2 tank that I use to temporaily lay down a blanket of CO2 and it seems to protect my wine for a...

    Starting Malolactic Fermentation

P, MLF is a slower process than AF and it'll take longer to get going. Also, the bubbles are smaller, the residual sugar is less, and the MLB don't generate nearly as much CO2 as yeast. Keep the temp up, the O2 exposure down, the pH level above about 3.3 and you should see results soon. Also...

    Show Us Your Pets

    O. P., Believe it or not, she does say "bad dog!" Even "bad, bad, bad dog!" They don't care. They know she's just another bossy female and they ignore her! Maybe the dogs learned that from me! :w Artic, She tells them to "be quite" or to "hush" everytime they start barking, but they keep...

    Show Us Your Pets

Thanks OP and arctic. Her wings are not clipped because it's supposed to be important for their mental health not to. That assumes the bird's mental health is more important than the owner's. I have 4 dogs (no good pictures though) and Chloe can bark just like them and she calls them by name...

    Show Us Your Pets

This is Chloe, my African Grey parrot. She's 3 years old on her way to 50+ years of age. Before I got her I read numerous books that said AGs have the intelligence of a 4 year old child. They were wrong; she has the intelligence and talking ability of a 5 year old! The first year she didn't...

    A great online order experience

1sr Timer, Seeing you're from eastern NC (I used to live in Greenville & Wilson), let me suggest www.grapestompers.com. They're really nice people, very knowledgable and have great prices. Since they're in western NC, you could probably get your orders in 1-2 days. I also agree w/Wade...

How much sugar to increase SG

Bob, Several weeks ago on a fruit wine making forum I saw it mentioned and widely agreed by several posters that 2.25 oz. (67.5g) sugar will raise s.g. of 1 gallon by 5 points (example-1.095 to 1.100). So, to test their statement I setup the following formulas on an Excel spreadsheet...

Cellar Craft Showcase 18L Red Mountain Cab

I started one of these 5 months ago. According to my notes it came with toasted oak sawdust and I added it on Day 1 to my primary. The RM is aging in a carboy now and I've only tasted it a few times. It doesn't have as much oak flavor as I like, but I think if someone doesn't like much oak...

Geranium/geraniol result in a wine. Dump IT.

Everything I've ever read (alot!) says it's the combination of mlf and K-sorbate that creates geraniol. I've never read of lack of K-meta being a cause. And yes, when you get it there's nothing that can be done to correct the geranium smell. Fred

Need source for bulk quanities of NaHO

Casey, Here's a source for 10% NaOH (at bottom of page): http://www.piwine.com/store/home.php?cat=266 To make 250 ml. of .2N NaOH, you use 18 ml. of this solution and add 232ml. of distilled water. Don't mix more solution than you will use in a couple of months and keep all NaOH...

    Reusing an oak stave

It certainly won't hurt to try it. Another possibility is to let it dry and then sand it down until you get to fresh wood although will remove any toast that it may have left. If you do sand it, you can re-toast it by putting it on a grill and carefully re-toasting. Fred

    Virgin Vintner's Post

V.V., What you're missing is a good book. One of the best is Techniques in Home Winemaking by Dan Pambianchi. Get it from any local winemaking store or on Amazon.com. There are others, but IMO it's the best. Fred

Old Stabilizer - Welches grape concentrate based wine recipe 5 gallons

I don't see a question here. But given the topic regarding stabilizer, I suggest you add Potassium Sorbate when you add your 5 Campden tablets. This will help ensure no future fermentation in the bottle. Fred

    Carboy!!!!

IMO throw it out. It's not worth getting cut or swallowing glass shards. When you pick up the empty carboy be very careful as it may fall apart into pieces that may cut you. By the way, never set carboys directly on concrete. Always set them on a rug or some other cushioning material. Fred
