I did the best I could

For my first competition I did the best I could. Wait until next year! I did not even want to enter the fruit wine because I didn't think it was all that good but it was the only bottle I had for that category. I knew the Riesling was pretty good but the wine I thought was the best (a 1/12...

Other Spelling Bee Sip-up or Immitation Concentrate?

(Lots of people have trouble with "ie" vs. "ei" in both English and German words.) I before E, except after C. apparently works in German as well.

Cheap seville wine rack at Staples

I have the wooden rack that Boatboy highlighted. It is an excellent buy. It looks better than the reviews would have you believe and goes together in 20 minutes.

Other Actual Varietals of Kit Wine due to Renaming

I think Liebfraumilch is a blend of Muller-Thurgau and Riesling.

How to develop a more educated palate?

I think what I am looking for is something that helps me identify say , cherry or raspberry or clove or oak, or butter when I don't know what is in a solution. Seagrass, be damned. Can I find the blackcurrent and cherry notes in a wine with no false positives and no false negatives? One needs...

    Introduction and First Questions

Dissolved sugar is just what it says it is. Sugar is one of those substances that will dissolve into water quite easily. Heating the water makes it go into solution quicker. The molecules get moving faster and makes more room. If you have ever made sugar water for hummingbirds it is 4 parts...

    presoaking oak cubes

The only time you would loose volume to oak cubes soaking up the wine is when you take them out. You can't loose volume if they are still in the carboy. The wine is still there; just inside the cubes. Even to make a difference when taken out you would have to be putting them in by the shovel...

    topping up carboy

I don't know why you guys don't look into Steve's AIO Headspace Eliminator and stop adulterating your wine. It will work with just a hand vac pump like mityvac.

    Kit taste

From the start of visiting this web site I have heard of "kit taste". Somehow people have been able to identify a kit wine by the "kit taste" Well, I think I might have made an id on the term. At least, for my taste buds. For the last 3 wines racked when young I have tasted something that I...

    Grape/Vine Identification - General Question

You could call your local extention office. It will be connected with your state ag college. Ask if they have a grape specialist that would be willing to come out and ID what you have. You could mention that you are planning a commercial operation.

    carboy cracked?

Still some headspace though, should I fill it further? No, just buy an All In One headspace eliminator. Cheaper than commercial wine and won't change the character of your wine.

    Carboy Score

Good score! They also do not have ribs to catch sediment.

Your (or someone you know)solar energy experiences

How come on this entire thread no one has mentioned insulation? This is the way to get a pay back faster than installing solar panels. Think foam; closed cell in the roof and open cell in the walls. Stop the air movement and seal the house. Good, double pane windows complete the project. Much...

    K-meta consensus for sanitation?

8 tsp is almost the same as 3 tbl, hardly any difference. So the only discrepancy is Grapestompers and their method is not enough.

    True happiness

Rocky, my recipe is very similar to yours except for the addition of thyme. I prepare the linguine just short of al dente as it will finish up in the sauce.

    True happiness

OK, since this was my turn to make dinner, I had a taste for linguini with clam sauce. The recipe called for 1/2 cup of white wine. No problem, since I had just bottled my first batch of a German style wine. A half cup for the recipe and a glass for me for a relaxing preparation. After finishing...

    The start. Readers beware....

The grape experts will be along later but i can thell you that Blueberries and grapes do not like the same PH. Blueberries need acid soil and grapes a more neutral. Forget the meter. Take a soil sample from the whole area; small scoops all over the planting area about 8 inches deep. combine that...

    All in One Headspace Eliminator

Steve, Just noticed that this device really pulls out the CO2 on a gassy wine. Will it do any harm to run for awhile just to degas? Terry
