I pressed my Cab&Merlot blend last weekend using my improvised 2x4 lever+bucket press. This time I used my little vacuum pump and That made the process so much easier, no more moving buckets up and down, no spill, no hassle. A little technology helps a long way!

Good for you!

If I were you, I would introduce an overflow reservoir between the carboy and the pump. If you overfill your carboy, liquid will get sucked into your pump, quite possibly destroying it. (It depends on what kind of pump it is.) If you have reservoir, with a tube in from the carboy and another out to the pump, the wine will remain there and your pump will be safe.

I made mine from a Mason jar. Steve (Vacuumpumpman) can sell you a two-hole bung and parts to convert a wine bottle to this use.

Thanks for the tip, Paul. Maybe I can use an additional carboy with the same setup downstream as a safety reservoir?

You could but you will drastically decrease your transfer rate and decrease your co2 removal when using a carboy for your overflow container.

You now have 2 carboys that you have to pull a vacuum on - prior to starting a transfer.

I make all sort of bungs and accessories to help out those who already have their own pump.

Steve, I cannot fathom why you would think this arrangement would increase the transfer rate. Care to explain?

Paul -
I was trying to type on a cell phone and auto correct took over -

Yes it should of said - decrease the transfer rate -

My apologies and thanks for the comment

So, berrycrush, I stand by my comments. Your idea of using a spare carboy, if you have one, will work fine. And, as I said earlier, Steve can sell you bungs for other vessels.
