No comparison. I've got one of those too, haven't used it in a long time and actually broke it the other day. And it will just sanitize, not clean. Watch the video its really cool what Steve did.

Steve, how well does it work with Star San? Does the foaming cause any problems?

I do not use Star San - but alot of users use saniclean - which is made from the same people who make Star San but it has anti foaming charactrics.

I have been working on the delabeler idea also !

... and have been beta tested as well.

If you need a beta tester for a delabeler, I have a few cases I am going to delabel over the next few months.

3- Yes - that is a good idea - I only use a meta solution.

I'm not sure about using meta solution in your setup for sanitization purposes.

1) meta solution sanitizes equipment primarily from SO2 gas. So, you put a little in the bottom and let the gas sanitize the bottle for 20 minutes. Or, you need a few minutes of contact with the solution.

TO SANITIZE EQUIPMENT: All equipment should be cleaned with soapy water first. ... Sanitize fermentation vessels by putting in 2 to 3 inches of solution in the bottom of the vessel. Seal the vessel air-tight for 20 minutes to allow the fumes from the solution to permeate the inside walls.

In stronger doses, potassium metabisulfite works well to sanitize your equipment... Rinse your equipment in this solution for about 5 minutes, and let drip dry.

2) All that agitation will quickly drive out the SO2, and then it is not good for sanitizing anymore.

I suggest PBW for cleaning, and Saniclean for sanitization. Oxygen Brewery Wash may also work for cleaning, but I have not yet checked whether it would foam.

Thanks I make take you up on being a beta tester

1+2 = no difference than using a manual bottle rinser which is being done by hand -

I place all my bottles upside down after sanitizing for a period of time before I turn them over to start filling them up with wine - so there is plenty of contact with the solution.
You can always use a bottle tree and get the same results with the SO2 gasses that will sanitize your bottles.

another solution is IO Star Sanitizer - An iodine based no-rinse sanitizer

I personally would never use soapy water to clean my bottles - Maybe
oxi-clean - mainly to help remove the label.

Like winemaking - there are many different ways, to get to the same result in the end.

Richmke,

Try this, mix kmeta 3 tablespoons to a gallon, use it to sanitze your bottles, let them sit 1 hr and then smell one. It will still smell like kmeta.i think there is enough contact to do the job.

Steve, can't I have two buckets? One with hot water and kmeta to draw from and the other for letting the dirty material to fall in. Then I would not need to filter the dirty water.

Yes you can !!

You are supplying the buckets and considering that it is a 3.3 GPM pump - you might be going thru alot of sanitizing solution !!! LOL

I can tell you with hot water and this bottle washer you can really clean dirty bottles. I built mine myself (with Steve's assistance) and this thing is a bargain.

That pump he includes is not cheap. The one i bought is not as powerful as his.

Posted this in the AIOWP thread, but it should have gone here...

OMG, no hesitation. Placing order now. Our kitchen sink is non-standard so I could never attach one of those spigot things. A self-contained pump is brilliant. I've got 120 bottles to do in the next couple weeks. Can't wait to try it.

I've got the whole home filter already; what's the best/cheapest filter to use in it for sanitizing? I assume it doesn't have to be very fine.

steve

And AIOWP steve's quick reply... (thanks steve)

best filter -
Is the sediment filter that is yarn wound from your local hardware store - just rinse it off and then it is reusable

here are some links on filters -

Tried Steve's bottle washer for the first time today. So much better than what I had been doing. I'm afraid my bottles were not all that dirty though. I thought it was going to be a good test because I picked up the bottles this weekend from a guy on craiglist but he had them pretty clean :). Really though it went very smoothly. Steve has attached a screen cover to the intake hose so large particles should not be a problem. I don't see myself hooking up the whole home filter. We are pretty consistent with rinsing the bottles when we're done with them so they are not usually filthy. Some comments on how I used it follow...

- I wanted the pressure to hit inside the neck of the bottle so the routine I got into started with me pressing down the lever by hand with the nozzle just barely inside the bottle. One quick rotation there then lower the bottle all the way and turn a time or two. That's it.

- I only had star-san and I thought it might be too sudsy but it worked great. When I pulled the bottle off there was water in it so a few quick shakes and the water and bubbles ran out.

- I needed to disconnect the cables from the pump when finished to drain the water from the hoses. Would it be OK to just pull the inlet out of the water and run the pump dry for a couple of seconds?

- I used a 5 gallon can, I think Steve's video looks larger but this worked fine.

- I washed 6 1500ml magnums and they worked fine too.

- My work location was near a GFI plug so I could reach that, but I could use a little more light while washing than I had. It's difficult with dark bottles to see if they are dirty or clean while doing this. A light inside the bottle would be awesome but I suspect that's more than we can hope for, even from Steve :).

I also picked up one of these because I needed a capper http://www.brewinternational.com/colonna-capper-corker/ and that just arrived yesterday. If you have the space, this worked great too for corking. And by the way even though they are a relatively new seller, I've ordered twice from brewinternational.com, both orders arrived promptly and their prices for what they carry are very good. No kits though.

Used the bottle washer a couple of times now and it continues to work pretty well. I washed a few cases of beer bottles this weekend and it went very smoothly. My next run will be very dirty wine bottles so I'll report back after that batch...
