So I started my Blackberry the other day and failed to get some strainer bags for the fruit. Mashed up the fruit really well and now realize the mistake I made. Racking to secondary is really going to be a huge PIA! Wine smells awesome thus far though.:dg
The cap is at least 3" thick.

oh thats so awesome, secondary racking will suck but wow that sure is purrdeee! :)

I am sure you are more experienced at wine making than I am, but I would get one of the large strainer bags and fit down into another large bucket and then pour this must into that bucket and left the strainer bag out. I did that with my muscadine, the only mistake I made then was to squeeze the bejeezus out of it. I should have only squeezed lightly because I ended up with a ton of pulp in my first racking.

I'm in the same position as UBB, basically... I have a cap made up of 25lbs of blackberries + 100lbs or so of grape skins... It's about 6" thick and not in any straining bag but im gonna do that "racking to secondary"..

Although i dont have another container the same size as my trash can so im gonna be stuck scooping most of it out and into straining bags, then squeezing.. Instead of the easier idea you posted :)

LOL, DEEZ. We learn as we go. I don't envy you this job. Put my grapes in a strainer bag. Looked at the trash can, went to town and bought some more 3/8 hose. From the can to the carboy, then hooked up to the vac. pump. Racked all the way across the basement. Worked like a charm. Found out why I should have a overflow canister. Will have next time the container is bigger than the one I am racking to. My vac is oil filled, all I have to do is change the oil. If it goes bad, I will probably just buy an all in one. Had this one tho, so decided to use it. Arne

i envy you i can only imagine what that smells like, a trash can full of blackberry/grape mmmm, i just wanna get in and sink up to my nose in it :)

:)

S'all being covered here
I had my whole head in it, numerous times every day

Racked it tonight. OMG was it a PIA. went through 3 straining bags and ended up with 5 1/2 gallons of wine. Added 3 oz of west coast blend oak. Hopefully it turns out.

West Coast Blend?
Any more info on that? Not familiar with it

Havent oaked any of my wines yet though..

Should turn out pretty friggin good, i know my blackberry was from last year before i added it to my new batch
