Corks being leakier than airlocks does not sound right to me. Do you have a reference for that? Tim Vandergrift says the opposite (although he also comes down on the side of bottle aging):
Thank you sour_grapes bringing this to my attention. I should have chosen my words better. I believe Tim was referring to the bung seal and not the airlock. I will concede there can be air leakage with a bung but my point was that it is not controlled the way it is with a cork, especially synthetic corks which can be designed for a specific amount of O2 exchange. I got that info directly from a commercial wine maker and a cork manufacturer.
