Just as a matter of interest - I surveyed a number of stores in my small city last July. I was looking for a cheaper carboy from the water bottles as I had my 6 Gallon wine store (30 bucks) plastic carboy full.
I didn't relish buying another one not knowing how many wines I would make - actually I started making many.
No store had any of the 1s or 2's just the 7's which are known bad.
But then! I found a # 1 PET at Canadian Superstore only about 12-13 bucks.
I used that for my 5 gal batch spiced ginger rhubarb.
I know there are this and that feedback - however my official 6 gal is also a # 1 PET as I looked on the bottom.
No problems so far. I was thinking of only one time use to age rhubarb 3- 4 months. Changed my mind - it's imminently re-usable
,
I also just used a balloon for an airlock - no problems so far.
The possible bad news -I was in the superstore last week - Didn't see it on the racks as they seemed out of 5 Gal tanks but I did see a #7 for a different brand (#7 IS bad ) .
So that frightened me!
I hope they still sell 'em. I ended up doing a lot of fruit wines and will probably do a lot more - whatever passes my way , I just wine it.
