All of our LHBS sponsors sell carboys. Check them out.

I would get some of each size. When racking from a 6 gallon, one either has to rack to another 6 gallon and add one or bottles of top off wine, or rack down into a 5 gallon and save the excess in an air locked 1.5 liter or 750 ml wine bottle.

Having both sizes is a nice advantage. if you are gong to make wine from kit, you at least will need the 6 gallon size.

And keep an eye on Craigslist. You can get some pretty good deals on there

Both sizes are great. I have both, plus some one gallons. I do most of my six gallon batches with a 5 and 1 gallon carboys.

Check out Craigslist. Buy them a few at a time!

cheap alternative

I recognize there may be other opinions on this one ... but most places that you can buy drinking water will sell a 5 gallon water carboy for $6-8 ... filled with water for the next batch :) They are not as thick as better bottles, but usually have a handle of some kind and are made of "safe" plastic. I've used a couple of those to supplement the bigger ones and no problems so far.

You can not use these for winemaking. They are "safe" for water not for winemaking. Alcohol is not water.
