This may seem strange to everyone, but I am beginning to hope a bit of at least cool weather comes back before long. We are in the middle of a string of record breaking warm weather here as are a lot of others in the country. This can mean bead things to a lot of us without our realizing it.
While I enjoy the warm weather as much as the next person, it is beginning to worry me. Why? Well first off, it will undoubtedly lead to higher maple syrup costs. Syrup is dependant on moderate springtime temps and too warm is bad. It makes the trees wake up too quickly and slows sap flow. Once the buds swell and begin to open, it is over for the year.
Next up is the supply of grapes for the year. All this warm weather is bound to wake the vines up soon if it continues and trick the vines into premature budswell and then budburst. During that time, the vines are susceptible to freezes. It is just too soon to expect overnight freezes to be over. If the primary buds freeze, then the overall crop can be greatly reduced.
So the next time you are out enjoying the early spring warm weather, remember that we may all be paying for it later in our wine and so on. I'm hoping for it to cool back down, without going to the other extreme (and secretly enjoying the sun and warm weather).
What are all you seeing out there?
