I am still new at winemaking. I am only on by second batch. I read where people are covering their carboys with bags, t-shirts, etc. Do I need to be doing this while my wine is in the carboy? And if so, what is the purpose of this. Right now. I am working on a batch of Gewurtztraminer. Thanks for helping me, nursejohn.

Carboy covers do a few things.

1st is keeps the light out. You want to protect your wine from light.

2nd I protects the glass. Also looks good if you keep it where others can see it.

Here is what I use. Real nice fleese material.

I use a big beach towel that wraps around the carboy. Works pretty good unless my kids want to go swimming

I have 20ish Charcoal ones.
Since you can only get the Italian carboys I beleive there is a height difference. make sure you order either the "tall" or "short" carboy covers.

Thanks for pointing that out. I think we are going to color code them according to size. Gotta say hubby was excited to see them so I'll order them ASAP before he can change his mind. May have helped that I opened a bottle of the Pacific Quartet that he really enjoyed.

In the past I've used the fancy upscale technique of sliding over a garbage bag over the carboy with a hole torn in the bottom for the airlock to poke through. The advantage is that once your wine is complete, you can make the hole bigger and use it as a classy raincoat.

If you have some duct tape you can model some sort of designer letters and fool people into thinking your wearing a Chanel or a Louis Vuitton!

As far as covering carboys, we use the boxes in which they came. We tape the flaps up and then place it upside down over the carboy. Easy to lift off to check the progress of things. When the carboy is empty we store the carboy back in the box.

Tepe I finally got around to putting these covers on the carboys and they look great. Thank you again for sharing that link.
