I'm a brand new winemaker and I just found a guy on Craigslist selling 4 1/2 gallon food grade plastic buckets with lids for $2.00. Ad says they previously held frozen fruit but have been washed out.

I will probably check them out sometime this weekend. Is there anything you can think of that I need to be aware of or know that may not be obvious to someone that is brand new into this hobby?

Hi Jericurl, Try checking with your local supermarket bakery for their frosting buckets. If you hit it right they may give them to you. Bakervinyard

Jericurl, they are worth what they are asking although they are a bit smaller than I would use. If I needed buckets, I would buy a few of them.

Well, I was thinking they would be perfect for 3 gallon batches of wine.

I think I may buy a couple from this guy and then hit up the bakeries. Thank you, that is a good tip.

if your making a 3 gallon batch of wine, you need a 3 gallon container, not 6 1/2 gallon containers...

Go buy a 6 gallon juice bucket; make the wine and keep the bucket. I've got a basement full of them and am giving them away...

if your making 1 gallon batches, use 1 gallon primaries..not 1/2 gallon..

if your making 3 gallon batch use a 3 gallon container...not 3 1 gallon are 6 1/2 gallon

selling 4 each 1/2 gallon food grade plastic buckets with lids for $2.00.

not 1 container holding 4 1/2 gallons.....
i give up.

Sorry......yes the containers are 4.5 gallons a piece. Which give me enough room to load stuff into a primary, stir, etc, without overflowing, then put into a 3 gallon second.

That's too funny!! James I thought the same thing at first. I had to read her post a couple time and then I had my "duh" moment. LOL

James,

What did Jericurl ever do to you????
do you really want her to spend all of her time mopping floors?

Seriously, you need at least 30% extra room for a primary. A 4.5 gal bucket is PERFECT for a 3 gallon batch of wine.

Crack me up !!

I guess we all need to read the entire threads before we start assuming !

We all know what happens when we assume - right ??
