Do you guys degas before pitching mlb or it does not matter anyways??
This Cab Sav/Merlot blend is very gassy and LOTS of bubbles coming up after racking at 1.004.

Lots of sediment already (just a few hours later) after racking at SG 1.004, should I rack once again before pitching mlb??

I only think about degassing before bottling. After aging I rarely have need to degas.

I think a lot of commercial wineries will re-rack after a couple days, then pitch MLB.

A bit of lees helps feed the mlb, so reracking is not necessary unless extremely heavy. Don't worry about gas, the mlf will create more.

Based on this picture from the left over 1 gallon jug, look at the sediment (about 1 inch and 1/4)...so I imagine there's a lot in the Demi John.

We usually like to wait until after we rack off the gross sediment before we start the MLF.

I agree with Turock. It looks like although you racked it once that you have a lot of sediment there. You want some fine lees, but that it an awful lot.

Obviously it was still really active when you added the mlb if this is the batch that foamed up bad when you added it.

Yes, I didn't re-rack and pitched VP41 last night. We'll see how it goes....

There is really no hurry to start the MLF when you intend to begin it in the secondary. Next time, you can take your time and let the gross lees settle out first, then rack and begin the MLF.

Thanks guys, will keep in mind next time.
I wanted to start it asap because I will be on vac on July 1 and away for 3 weeks, I just wish MLF is done by June 30. Otherwise the wine will be sitting alone until my return....
