Experimental pruning

This is the vineyard today after a light pruning. I have a couple of plants I've been experimenting with different pruning. Specially training them to the top wire, not the middle one. Sure would make harvest easier. The only problem might be winter kill.

What varieties are you growing and what is your zone? What is your snow cover and winter temps?

Open up your vines allow the sun on the fruit remember they are only a vine

Cab, Syrah, Merlot and Carmenere in zone 5-6. I'm just below the normal snow line. This year I had 2 ft for over a month. Normal is snow for a couple of weeks.

I trim about every 2 weeks to keep the canopy open. So far, I've watered lightly twice. We are hitting the dry season but temps have been unusually cool this year.

Right now, it's looking like a very good crop.

Disregard the vines on the left side, first 6 vines are table grapes. I trim those totally different and water them regularly. End vines are also allowed a lot of "freedom".

Stop watering force the vines to push roots deeper cover your vines at the base during the winter uncover in the spring
